Check for any Climbable Objects

Keep the pool area clear of anything a child could use to climb over the fence, whether it's a permanent fixture or something that can be moved around.

Here are examples of items that could jeopardize compliance if found near your pool fence:

  • Trees (with branches low enough to climb)

  • Shrubs or other plants

  • BBQs

  • Furniture

  • Air-conditioning units

  • Retaining walls and other fences

  • Water taps or hose reels

  • Any object that could provide a foothold for climbing

Check Gate

  • Verify that gates automatically close securely, regardless of how slightly they're left open. Dependability is key.

  • Confirm that the opening mechanism is positioned at a minimum of 1.5m above ground level. Alternatively, if it's inside the gate, ensure it remains out of children's reach.

  • Ensure gates can only be opened using the designated mechanism.

  • Gates  should consistently swing outward, away from the pool area.

Check Height and Gaps in Pool Fence

  • Fence should be at least 1.2m tall

  • Fence needs to be structurally sound, the fence cannot bend when force is applied.

  • No gaps greater than 10cm across, including the gap between the bottom of the fence and ground.
